The Fox And the turtle
For
want of a better meal, a starving fox captured a turtle, but then could not
manage to break through the solid shell in order to eat it.
“You
should try putting me in the water for a while to soften me up,” suggested the
shrewd turtle.
This
sounded like excellent advice to the fox. He carried his prey to the stream and
immersed it in the current. The turtle, who was a superb swimmer, slid out of
the fox's paws and re-emerged in mid-stream laughing, “There are animals who
are even more cunning than you. Now you'll stay hungry!”
The husband who looked after the house
A
farmer's wife became fed up with being criticised by her husband about how she
ran the house, so one day she challenged him. “Tomorrow I'll go out and work in
the fields, and you can take care of the work in the house, if you think you
can do it better than me!” The next day the husband did his best to do things
right. He began to make the butter, but his efforts soon made him thirsty and
he went down to the cellar to drink some wine. He opened the barrel, but then
he heard the pig come into the house and knock over the butter dish. He rushed
back upstairs to stop the animal from causing more trouble, but he forgot to
put the cork in the wine barrel again.
He
kept getting into trouble all morning long. At lunchtime, when he put the stew
on to boil, he remembered that he had not taken the cow out to pasture yet;
but there was no time anymore. He decided to take it onto the roof, so it could
eat the grass that grew among the tiles. It was very difficult to get the cow
onto the roof. In the end he succeeded, and to make sure that the animal did
not fall off, he tied it there with a rope.
Then
he remembered the stew over the fire. To get back to the kitchen as fast as
possible, so that the stew did not bum, he lowered himself down the chimney.
For safety, he tied the other end of the rope to his foot. But the cow fell off
the roof Just then, and the man was yanked back up the chimney and got stuck
there.
When
his wife came home from the fields, the first thing she saw was the cow
dangling from the rope, so she cut it loose. On the other end the man dropped
down.... into the fireplace. When the woman entered the house, she found the
floor covered in butter, the cellar flooded with wine, and her husband upside
down with his head in the stew!
She
returned to her housework. From then on, of course, he never grumbled at her
again.
The fox and the Eels
A
fisherman was returning home after a day by the river with his cart full of
eels. Reynard the fox saw him and immediately thought of a way of getting
himself a sumptuous dinner. He down in the middle of the road and pretended to
be dead.
When
the fisherman saw him, he fell for the trick. He picked up the fox, convinced
that he had found himself a beautiful fox skin, and put it in the back of his
cart. Once on the move, Reynard emptied all the eels out into the road,
gathered them up and ran off. So the gullible fisherman lost both his fox fur
skin and his fish.
The Pride of Icarus
Daedalus,
one of the greatest inventors of ancient times, was asked by the king of Crete
to build a maze where he could imprison the Minotaur, a monster half-man and
half-bull, so that it could never get out again. The ingenious architect did as
he was asked, but some time later he helped Theseus, a famous hero, to kill the
monster. As a punishment, the king of Crete ordered Daedalus to be imprisoned
himself in the labyrinth, with his young son, Icarus.
“Don't
worry,” the father encouraged the boy. “I know already how we can get out of this
prison!”
Daedalus
made a huge pair of wings and he stuck them with wax onto his son's shoulders.
The wings could be moved up and down by moving the arms. Then Daedalus made
another pair of wings for himself.
The
wings worked wonderfully. The two men took off, and with a few armstrokes they
managed to climb high enough to get over the walls of the labyrinth, But then
the young boy, out of pride, wanted to fly higher and higher, until the heat
from the sun Melted the wax and his wings fell off. Then Icarus plunged to the
ground and died. Daedalus, full of sadness, carried on flying until he reached
safety.
The Donkey’s Skin
There
was once a rich and powerful king who, though old and ugly, took it into his
head to marry a young beautiful girl at the court. The girl did want to marry
the king and asked stepmother for help to escape this marriage.
“You
can never say no to the king,” said the woman, ”but you can lay down absurd
conditions. Ask him for the skin of his donkey.”
Now
this donkey was a magic donkey, on which all the king's power depended, so the
two of them never dreamed for one moment that he would make such a sacrifice.
But the king at once sent the girl what she had asked for.
The
young girl decided to run away. put on the donkey skin, so she would not be
recognised, and fled to nearby country. To earn herself a living there, she
took the job of a serving girl in an inn: and indeed she was good at everything
she did, especially baking cakes. She never took off her disguise and, though
it made her look horrible, the donkey kept her safe. Only occasionally when she
was alone in her room, did she wash and comb her hair and put on the fine dress
she had brought with her.
One
day, the son of the king of that land happened to come to the inn. Looking
around the place, he found a locked door. Out of curiosity he peeped through
the keyhole, and saw such a beautiful young girl that he fell In love at first
sight. When he asked who stayed in that room, he was told that It was only an
ugly serving girl.
When
Donkey Skin was shown to him, he was forced to admit that it was not the girl
he had seen through the keyhole. The prince grew lovesick and lost his
appetite. As he grew weaker, the court doctor decided that he could only be
tempted to eat again. by a piece from one of Donkey Skin's delicious cakes. So
she was commanded to bake a cake, but when the prince took his first bite he
found in it a ring, which had slipped from Donkey Skin's finger.
The
prince remembered having seen the ring through the keyhole on the beautiful
young girl's finger. He vowed he would marry only the girl on whose finger the
ring fitted perfectly. To make him happy, the king and the queen agreed to
this, especially since a finger small enough to fit that ring must surely
belong to a grand lady.
The
search began at once, and In the end even Donkey Skin was ordered to try the
ring on. And then the “ugly” serving girl had no trouble at all in proving that
not only was the ring hers, but that she really was the beautiful young girl
that the prince had seen at the Inn. Everything was soon sorted out and a grand
wedding took place that very same day.
The Hole in the water
A
young man who was alone in the world decided to get married. He was handsome
and rich, but it seemed that in the whole land there was not the right wife for
him: either they were too young, or too old. There remained just one lovely
young maiden, whom he had met at the well, but she seemed to be a bit mad. Not
only did she say that her stepmother was a fairy, but she also insisted that
her stepmother would only allow her to marry a man who could perform a certain
very difficult task. “What is that?” asked the young man.
“He
has to make a hole in the water.”
“That’s
impossible,” exclaimed the young man. “You will never find a husband.”
“Yes,
I will find one,” replied the young girl. “My stepmother says that when someone
is truly in love, they can even work miracles.”
The
young man was truly in love, but he had no idea how to solve the problem. He
sighed and suffered for a long time but he did not give up. Then one day he
found that the well had frozen over. Suddenly he understood. Seizing a stout
stick, he made a hole in the frozen surface ….. and so he was able to marry the
beautiful maiden.
A man and his two wives
There
was once a man who had two wives. One of them was old, and the other was young.
The man himself was not young. His hair was divided to two colours, his hair
was half black and other was white.
When
the man stayed with her second wife, the first wife who was still young did not
want her husband to look old because she herself was not old (still young). So
she pulled out all his husband’s white hair to made him look young.
But
when the man went to his first wife, the second wife who was old did not want
her husband to look young because she herself was old. So she pulled out all
his husband’s black hair to made him look old.
At
last the poor man had neither black hair nor white hair on his head, he had not
hair forever.
The king and stilts
The
king wanted to test Abunawas' smartness. So, he invited Abu to the palace.
"You
want me, Your Majesty?"
"Yes,
you've fooled me three times. And that's too much. I want you to leave this
country. Otherwise, you'll have to go to jail."
"If
that is what you want," Abu said sadly, "I will do what you
say."
"Remember,
start from tomorrow you may not step on the ground of this country
anymore," the king said seriously. "Yes, Your Majesty."
Abu
then left the palace sadly.
The
following morning the king ordered two of his guards to go to Abu's house. They
were surprised. Abu was still there. He was swimming in a small pool in his
front yard.
"Hey,
Abu, why haven't you left this country? The king ordered you not to step on the
ground of this country again, didn't he?"
"Sure
he did," answered Abu calmly. "But, look at me. Do I step on the
ground? No, I'm swimming. I'm in the water."
The
guards were not able to argue with Abu. So, they left and went back to the
palace to report what they had seen. The king was curious on Abu's excuses not
to leave the country, therefore, he summoned Abu. Abu came to the palace on
stilts.
"Abu,
I will surely punish you because you did not do what I said. And now, look at
you! You walked on stilts like a child. Are you crazy?" said the king
pretended to be furious.
I
remember exactly what you said, Your Majesty," Abu answered calmly.
"This morning I took a bath in the pool so that I did not have to stand on
the ground. And since yesterday I have been walking on stilts. So you see, I do
not step on the ground.”
The
king was not able to say anything. He thought that Abu was really smart. He
then offered Abu a drink. Abu was glad and smiled a lot.
The two holes
There
were two good friends, Yamada and Shimada, who liked to tell stories to each
other.
Yamada
asked Shimada, “What’s the thing that becomes larger the more you take away
from it?”
“I
don’t know,” Shimada answered.
“It’s
a hole,” Yamada told him laughingly.
“All
right,” Shimada said, “Let me tell you a story about a hole.”
“A
painter kept two cats. One was large and the other was small. One day, his
friend noticed there were two holes in the door of his house. One was large and
the other was small.
“What
are those two holes for?” he asked the painter.
“I
keep two cats.” The painter replied. “One’s large and the other’s small. The
large hole is for large cat and the small hole is for the small cat.”
“How
silly!” his friend exclaimed. “Why can’t the small cat use the same hole as the
large cat?”
“You’re
right,” said the painter. “I hadn’t thought of that.”
Why the frog’s eye bulge
Once
upon a time, the only fire on earth was guarded by two giants. No one dared ask
them for any of it.
At
long last, a brave man thought of a
plan. He called together all his animal friends and asked them to help him. He
told a frog to wait just outside the village where he was living. A little
beyond the frog, he placed a horse; beyond the horse, he placed a cat; beyond
the cat, he placed a dog and beyond the
dog, he placed a lion. Beyond the lion was the house where the giants lived.
The
man then went to call on the giants. They were pleased to see him as they felt
rather lonely living by themselves.
“Can
you please let me have some of your fire?” he asked them. “No one else has any
fire at all.”
The
giants shook their heads. “the fire belongs to us and we can’t give any of it
away.” They replied.
The
man then made a sign out of the window to the lion. The lion began to roar; the
dog to bark; the cat to meow; the horse to neigh and the frog to croak. The
giant rushed out to see what was the matter.
As
soon as they did so, the man pick up a piece of burning wood from the fire. He
ran away with it as fast as he could. The giant saw what had happened and
chased after him. The man gave the piece of burning wood to the lion. It was
soon passed on from animal to animal until it reached the frog. The frog hopped
straight for the village. But the giant caught him by the tail. The poor frog
was so frightened that his eyes almost fell out, he jumped once more and landed
in the middle of village. Carrying the fire with him. But he left behind his
tail in the giants’ hands. So the people in the village were able to obtain
fire for the first time. but the poor frog lost his tail and his eyes have
bulged ever since.
The guard’s rewards
There
was once a king in Tibet who liked to eat fish. One year, there was a very bad
drought. The rivers became dry and fish became scarcer and scarcer.
The
king felt very hungry as he did not like to eat any other kind of food. He
called his ministers to see him.
“anyone
who brings fish to the palace can ask for anything
he
likes as a reward,” he told them.
Not
long afterward, a man brought to the palace some salted fish which he had
obtained from India.
He
was stopped at the palace gate by the guard.
“Where
are you going? Stop! What are you carrying?
“I…..I….
I’ve brought some fish for the king.”
“Fish!
Where did you get it?”
“I
brought it back from a recent visit to India.”
“All
right. Leave it with me. I shall pass it on to his majesty.” The guard thought.
“I’ll get a big reward from the king for this.”
“No”
said the man. “I want to give it to the king myself.”
The
guard tried to persuade him to leave the fish with him but the man refused.
“you’ll
have to agree to give half the reward you get from the king.” He said.
“Otherwise. I shan’t let you in.”
“yes.
I agree. By the way sir,” asked the man. “what is your name?”
“Everyone
calls me the ‘one-eyed Ox’,” answered the guard.
The
king was very pleased to have some fish again.
“What
would you like as a reward?” he asked the man.
“I
would like to be caned a thousand times, your majesty,” the man answered.
“that’s
very strange reward,” the king said. “Are you sure that is what you want?”
“Yes,
your majesty.”
The
king thought to himself, “He must be a fool! Why does he want to be caned?”
So
he sent for his servants to cane the man. “Beat him lightly,” he ordered.
“Don’t hurt him. He brought me some fish.”
When
he had been caned five hundred times. The man stood up and said, “Enough. I
don’t want any more.”
Everyone
was very surprised. “who should be given the rest, then?” they asked. The man
told the king what had happened. “Please give the guard the rest. This is what
I’ve arrange with him.”
The
king was very angry and ordered One-eyed Ox to be brought in.
By
this time, One-eyed Ox was dreaming of what he was going to do with his half of
the reward. He thought at least it would be money or other precious things.
When he saw how angry the king looked, he was frightened.
“Cane
his as hard as you can,” the king ordered his servants. “This is half of the
reward.”
One-eyed
Ox could hardly walk after being caned. However, he had to thank the king for
giving him half the reward. “Thank you, Your Majesty,” he said. “You are really
too kind. This is too big a reward for me.”
He
never tried to obtain a reward again from anyone who came to see the king.
